SUPPORT IN THE DESIGN OF INFRASTRUCTURE SUITABLE FOR PROTECTED SPECIES

The extensive restoration or repair, or the construction of new infrastructure, particularly in an urban environment, may conflict with protected species living on the work site. In order to mitigate these situations, FALCON provides consulting services including recommendations and compensatory measures to manage the problem while respecting those laws protecting wildlife.

FALCON also conducts behavioural monitoring of species before, during, and after construction to ensure that their behaviour is not disturbed by human activities. If disturbance becomes an issue, mitigation measures can be put into place, or a particular intervention may be performed as needed to ensure the conservation of the species.

FALCON has been active in the environmental monitoring of animal species during the renovation of bridges and other manmade structures since 2003.

HABITAT, FLORAL AND WILDLIFE CHARACTERIZATION, INVENTORY AND MAPPING SERVICES

Suitable habitat knowledge is required in order to produce reliable environmental studies, risk analyses or wildlife surveys.

FALCON has GIS expertise to assess land-uses and to conduct habitat surveys. Remote sensing techniques and aerial photointerpretation can be used to quickly assess land-uses across large areas.

In addition, land surveys can help to better characterize habitats on a finer scale. These processes allow FALCON to produce rigorous GIS analyses and professional maps.

CONSERVATION PLAN DESIGN

Animal species that are protected by a special status or certain habitats of ecological value must be studied to assess the importance and interest of their preservation as well as how this preservation may be accomplished.

FALCON possesses the expertise to develop such conservation plans, which give guidelines to preserve a species or habitat. This can take the form of an action plan, recommended priority measures, etc.

DETECTION, IDENTIFICATION AND MONITORING OF ENDANGERED OR AT-RISK SPECIES

Wildlife that qualifies as Species-at-risk (SAR) or that are in the process of becoming threatened or endangered benefit from procedures that work to protect individuals and the habitats in which these species live.

By performing field surveys, FALCON can recognize the presence of SAR. The presence of a SAR usually requires that a conservation plan for the species be established so that measures are taken to comply with the laws protecting it and its habitat.

ENVIRONMENTAL REGULATION COMPLIANCE AUDITING

Laws, regulations and international agreements protect the vast majority of animal species and their habitats. FALCON can help you validate your actions or your work plan to make sure these do not conflict with the interpretation of laws and regulations.

Our services also allow the establishment of an action plan to help you to correct or prevent non-compliance with legislation.

ATTENUATION MEASURES AND WILDLIFE MITIGATION PROGRAMS

Some species can cause cohabitation problems of when using the same environment or resources as humans. This is often the case for so-called “nuisance” species whose presence is not desired in certain sites (as is the case for pigeons, gulls, geese, and crows).

To best deal with these issues, a visit to analyze the situation can identify the reason for their presence, causes for the problems and solutions for mitigation.

FALCON can then apply these mitigation measures or perform wildlife management, or assist the client in their self-directed approaches.

SECTORIAL IMPACT STUDIES

Before several construction projects or repair works are undertaken, environmental impacts that these works will generate need to be studied. Environmental impact study is often divided into different components. With its expertise in conservation, with protected species, in wildlife management and habitat, FALCON can take over the wildlife component. With the recommendations of FALCON, the work will comply with laws and regulations and so that the impact on wildlife and habitats is limited, reduced and that the negative impacts that would be caused be compensated.

PROGRAM FOR WILDLIFE MONITORING

With all the permits required to handle, band or relocate wildlife (if permitted), FALCON is authorized to intervene with wildlife. With over 20 years of experience with birds, FALCON is able to identify when the birds are sick or injured, if their habitat are adequate or if the work carried out close conflict with their activity. In constant collaboration with the Ministry of Wildlife, FALCON develops wildlife monitoring programs focused on compliance with laws and regulations, on animal welfare and the mitigation of human activities and wildlife.
